GOLD AT THE VIRGINIA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

WAHS ROWERS TAKE HOME GOLD AT THE VIRGINIA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Western Albemarle High School rowing team brought home six gold and four silver medals.

Western Albemarle High School (WAHS) rowers traveled to a 1,500-meter stretch of water on the Occoquan Reservoir in Sandy Run Regional Park in Fairfax, Virginia to compete in the 2022 Virginia Scholastic Rowing Championship on Saturday, May 14.  The regatta not only establishes the fastest boats in Virginia, but is also the one at which boats qualify for the Scholastic Nationals and for the USRowing Youth Nationals.  The rowers’ success qualifies a majority of the WAHS boats for both national events.

In addition to Captain Sime’s, the team took home six additional gold medals.  Sophomore Calla Dagner in the Women’s Junior Single (whose time would have placed her second in the senior event), Sophomore Ryan Kennedy in the Men’s Junior Single, junior Ravenna Barber and senior Adelaide Bragaw (who goes on to row at Cornell Fall) in the Women’s double event, (juniors Lucas Farmer and Will Donovan in the Men’s double, juniors Tate Kessler and Jeremy Burke in the Men’s junior double, and the Women’s junior quad made up of juniors Haley Lenox and Meghan Byrne and sophomores Greta Slaats and Maya Kim.

Two silver medals were awarded to the men’s and women’s junior quads with one bronze awarded to the men’s double.

Coach Craig Redinger noted that the “teams hard work, discipline and dedication through three seasons continues to be reflected in the success that the team enjoys.”
